Im living in Prague for the moment, Budapest has been a couple of years, but I believe the costs of living are pretty similar. You can get a night for somewhere between 10-20 euros, depending on standards. Food is not that expensive, let's say 10 euros for a meal and beer is dirt cheap (1,40-2,00 for 0.5l, cocktails are around 3-4 euros).
Costsin Prague and Budapest are very similar, eating out, drinking and getting around is very inexpensive if you avoid the tourist traps. I got back from Prague yesterday after a five night trip and spent no more than £300 which included my accommodation. I went to Budapest last November and spent no more than £250 for a three night visit.
