I recommend Dreamsongs: Volume I, a best-of collection of Martin's early works. In addition to "The Ice Dragon," which is a great 'near-ASOIAF' novella, the "Hybrids and Horrors" section has a bunch of worthwhile material: "Nightflyers" and "Sandkings" are both phenomenal scifi-horror novellas; "Remembering Melody" and "The Monkey Treatment
